...in fact, the Department of Health recommends that everyone should have their eyes tested at least every 2 years. For many people, particularly children and the over 70s, more frequent eye examinations are recommended, and these are available fully-funded by the NHS.

NHS funded eye examinations are available on certain age, medical or income based grounds if:

  • you are under 16
  • you are 16-18 and in full time education
  • you are over 60
  • you have been diagnosed with glaucoma
  • you have been advised by a hospital ophthalmologist that you are at risk of glaucoma
  • you are over 40 and are the parent, sibling or child of someone with glaucoma
  • you are diabetic
  • you are registered as blind or partially sighted
  • you have been prescribed complex lenses
  • you or your partner are in receipt of Income Support, Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance, Income-related Employment and Support Allowance or Pension Credit Guarantee Credit
  • you are named on, or entitled to, an NHS Tax Credit Exemption Certificate, or you are name on a valid HC2 certificate.
